Whitsunday extend their lead at the top, While the Camelbok start to gain momentum

Round nine of the Mackay rugby union competition kicked off over the weekend, with the very much anticipated clash between the top two sides the unbeaten Proserpine Whitsunday Raiders and reigning champions Mackay City Redman to be played at Quarry hill. Both teams boasted strong outfits and promised to be a tight match.

Slade Point Prepare to take on the Bowen Mudcrabs on the weekend

WHITSUNDAY  drew first blood and what would be the only try of the First half to Cadell Schlenner out wide but was not able to then convert the extra points.

The half was a hard slog with neither team able to gain any real momentum and solid defense from both sides Left the match delicately placed 5 v 0 at the half.

The second half sore the match open up as often does when the bodies start to Tire, this time it was The Redman who crossed to level the scores but again inaccurate kicking meant the game would be tied 5 v 5.

Whitsunday immediately shot back and had crossed for their 2ndtry within the next 5 mins, to again take the lead.

A penalty to Jesse Meinicke drew the Redman closer but it was all the raiders from there crossing for a 3rdtry and a conversion to take out the match 20 v 8 and hold onto the top spot of the ladder.

In other games the Kuttabul Camelbok sent a message to the rest of the competition with a commanding 57 v 18 victory of the improving Brothers side.

A match that early on was tightly contested with Brothers taking an early lead, what followed was entertaining end to end rugby but no team managing to take control, Kuttabul managed 2 try for the half to lead 13 v 5 at the break.

The 2ndhalf saw the Camelbok kick into gear and dominate set-piece and possession to run in a further 6 try’s and the boot of Tyson Gaulker was on clearing 5 conversions.

Brothers tried to stage a minor comeback scoring the next 2 tries in quick succession but was in vain, allowing the Bokkys to jump off the bottom of the ladder,

In the final match of the round Bowen Mudcrabs snuck back on the Winners list with a close 24 x 22 win over Slade point
