AROUND eighty cyclists and runners challenged themselves in very cool but sunny conditions for the 6.4km ascent from Netherdale to Eungella Chalet. The perfect conditions suited the athletes as the cyclists started first with runners following one minutes later.

All athletes were vying for the prestigious Torque Tyre & Trailer Spares perpetual trophy where the gold medal winners for male and female cyclist and runner are inscribed in history. A respectful one minute silence was also observed by all at the start line for former Mackay Road Runners Queen of the Mountain, Laura Pettifer who tragically passed away in 2008 in a cycling training accident.

Laura was a superbly talented triathlete who attained a high level of success with her cycling and running in particular. Laura was very involved in helping other athletes get the best of themselves, so much so, that her Mother, Veronica donates prizes and a perpetual trophy to the first two junior male and female runners from their 3.2km start every year since her passing.

Congratulations to the winners of the Mackay Road Runners signature event for the 2021 Laura Pettifer Inspirational Award, won by Damien Rutland and Lily Leven, she would be so proud! Podiatry Mackay’s Donald Orr has also been a major sponsor of the junior runners for the club for close to twenty years. Donald has always been very supportive, sponsoring the Junior King and Queen of the Mountain as well as the Mackay Road Runners’ Magic Mile later in the year. Donald also provides ‘feet’ lollies for the runners as they cross the finish line.

The ‘feet’ lollies are so cool, everyone loves them as they mirror Donald’s profession perfectly. The M-Test Eungella King and Queen of the Mountain foot race Signature event also doubles as one of the Mackay Road Runners’ Club Championship events, thus earning runners valuable open and age category points towards end of year trophies. M-Test’s Merv and Wendy Shields have been supporting Mackay Road Running events since it’s inception 45 years ago.

Merv and Wendy, who are life members of the Club, have been integral in the running and continued success of the club. M-Test donated cash prizes to the first four male and female runners to cross the line after the seriously tough 6.4km upward trek from the start line at Netherdale.

The Eungella Chalet was a welcome sight for both runners and cyclists where they could refuel from the Chalet’s awesome breakfast menu. The club sends its thanks to Tess and her team for providing a Eungella Chalet Voucher as a random draw as well as quick and yummy brekky options.
