Mackay community group to go extra mile for regional health
Life can throw many challenges and hardships, but some isolated residents in the Mackay region have to travel far to get medical support.
Blue River Mackay Lions vice president Josephine Barfield said she saw some of her relatives struggle without a dialysis machine and knows what it is like to work in regional health care.
She said the main concern most residents had was the location and water source, as some haemodialysis machines would consume up to one litre a minute just for flushing.
Members from Blue River Mackay Lions started fundraising in 2019 and raised up to $23,000 before the pandemic struck.
She said the club hopes to raise $500,000 for the renal mobile dialysis support project but expected it would take around five years but was prepared to “go until it is done.”
