Temporary closure for Proserpine Library
PROSERPINE Library will be temporarily closed for three months because of upcoming construction works at the nearby Entertainment Centre.
A June 9 report says the Whitsunday Regional Council will close the library to protect patrons' health and safety.
“During the 12-week period, commencing June 14, 2021, construction works at the Proserpine Entertainment Centre will restrict access to the rear and front doors of the library,” the report said.
“Parking will also be restricted in the rear car-park.
“Arrangements have also been made for the removal of the temporary toilet block to facilitate the installation of the Cenotaph.”
It was reported this would cost the Whitsunday Regional Council $500,000.
However, the First Five Forever and Story-time sessions would be relocated to another Council building.
“The library is an integral Council service to the community,” the report said.
“It is proposed to relocate a number of activities...to the Proserpine Administration Building and/or other outreach locations for no more than a 12-week period.”
The Council will provide a mobile library as an alternative, which will come as a pop-up library trailer on Main Street.
This will be complemented by a new home book delivery service, along with click and collect borrowing for all library patrons.
“Our online library services will continue to be available, with a wide range of e-books, e-audio books, e-magazines, e-newspapers and online learning resources,” the report said.
