Proserpine and the Whitsundays welcome special visitors

It is not too often that our Dog Squad based at the Mackay Police complex get the opportunity to travel and work around our  large police district.

When the chance to work in the Whitsundays and Proserpine arose recently, it was grabbed with all four paws by Police Dog (PD) Griffin and his handler, Sergeant Jacob Bates.

Sergeant Bates advised it gave both he and PD Griffin the chance to meet face to face with officers from both police stations who ordinarily wouldn’t be able to do so.

“It gave us the chance to reach out to divisions outside of Mackay and demonstrate how we work in different scenarios and situations,” Sergeant Bates explained.

“Hopefully by doing so it leads to more requests for deployments outside of Mackay.

“It wasn’t all about education though.”

Sergeant Bates and PD Griffin teamed up with both Proserpine and Whitsunday officers to patrol the Safe Night Precinct of Airlie Beach on a late rostered shift.

“We saw it as an opportunity to assist with liquor enforcement and public order patrols – we are hoping to be involved in these situations more regularly as time goes by as well.”

Officers from both Proserpine and the Whitsundays appreciated the opportunities that this visit bought.

We are confident that based on PD Griffin’s expression in the image above, he appreciated the trip also.
