Mackay Police have arrested a man after responding to calls from the public reporting a possibly armed man who had entered the Westpac Bank and other businesses in Mackay's City Heart.

The man was caught by police and arrested near the kebab shop at the corner of Victoria and Wood streets.

Jaroam Sciberras, who works at the kebab shop worker, saw the arrest unfold.

“I saw the guy walk into the bank, and then back down Wood street,” he said.

“A few minutes later I saw the police walk into the bank and back out they grabbed the bloke and put him up against a window and patted him down.

“They pulled out a gun but something was off about it, like, it could have been fake but I don't know,” he said.

The man is now in police custody.

No further information is available.

Up Date:  Police can confirm the weapon used today was a replica firearm.
