New accessible landfill station to be created at Mt Coolon
THE WHITSUNDAY Regional Council successfully secured about $134,565 of funding from the Queensland Government to establish a new, fit for purpose, waste transfer station at Mt Coolon.
This station will be at a location that is more accessible for local residents.
A report was presented to the Council in 2020 that indicated the Mt Coolon landfill site was being illegally used by commercial operators, which costed up to $50,000 in extra operational costs.
The site was originally intended to provide a waste service for residents only.
This site was unmanned, but the newly secured funding has allowed a new transfer station to be constructed, which was identified as being beneficial for the council and community to ensure compliance and crackdown illegal use.
The establishment of a new waste transfer station will see the permanent closure and rehabilitation of the landfill, reduce the community’s environmental footprint and allow for the recycling of some waste types.
The funding came the through the state government’s Levy Ready Round two.
