Minds turning to art

TALENT: Art for mental health awareness

KRISTIE Bull helped start an art exhibition in Mackay to promote awareness of mental health issues in the community.

The Mind Australia peer practitioner said the exhibition, now in its second year, started as a fun way to encourage struggling people to reach out for help.

“Originally, it was an idea for mental health week in our company,” Mrs Bull said.

“Our aim is to create a safe space for people, who lived or have living experience with mental health challenges. This can include people such as carers, support workers and families.

“We believe that mental health journeys are quite individual and vary from people’s experiences, no matter what diagnoses they might have.

“We aim to show the community that it is quite diverse, and it gives the audience a little look into what people’s experiences are.

“It might even touch someone who is struggling themselves and encourage them to reach out and get some support.”

Interest for the art exhibition is gaining momentum, as Mrs Bull said they have received a few enquiries about submitting artwork.

So far, they have received five submissions, but she said there was no theme this year, which allows artists the freedom to create artwork that was personal for them.
