Mackay business scores $1m manufacturing boost

A Mackay-based mining services business is one of 86 across the country to receive funding under the second round of the Morrison Government’s Manufacturing Modernisation Fund (MMF).

Federal Member for Dawson George Christensen congratulated CQ Field Mining Services on being awarded $1 million for its project to transform METS service for future growth.

“Maintenance and construction contractor CQ Field Mining Services are looking to the future with their plan to invest in transforming METS service, and I congratulate this Paget-based team on the success of their application under the Manufacturing Modernisation Fund,” Mr Christensen said.

“This funding is designed to help businesses modernise their manufacturing processes, which improves productivity, reduces costs and enables them to target new export opportunities and create highly-skilled manufacturing.

“We need to grow our manufacturing sector, which directly employs more than 900,000 workers and contributes almost $120 billion in exports.

“There are estimates that for every one manufacturing job we create, another three jobs are created in other areas of the economy.

“I would encourage other businesses in the region to find more about MMF grants as there are further rounds to come.”

MMF round two, which builds upon the success of the first round, was a competitive merit-based grants program, with applications assessed by a committee of independent industry experts.

Businesses are required to match government funding on a three-to-one basis, with government grants covering up to 25 percent of eligible project expenditure. The minimum grant amount is $100,000 and the maximum grant amount is $1,000,000. Projects must be completed within two years.

The grants are part of the $1.5 billion Modern Manufacturing Strategy and eligible companies need to demonstrate that their products align with one of the Government’s six National Manufacturing Priorities (NMPs).

Those priorities are Resources Technology and Critical Minerals Processing, Food and Beverage, Medical Products, Recycling and Clean Energy, Defence and Space.
