Local MP slams ScoMo over insurance rates
PRIME Minister, Scott Morrison, has been accused of "sitting on his hands" and failing to stop insurance companies' from overcharging with skyrocketing home insurance premiums.
Mackay Labor State Member, Julieanne Gilbert, explained that "insurance is a federal government responsibility and SCott Morrison has done nothing for years".
"I urge Prime Minister Morrison to get off his backside and urgently fix this matter," Julieanne Gilbert said.
"We need action, not the smoke and mirrors and false promises that we've seen from some federal members of parliament on this issue.
"Scott Morrison is still doing nothing to address the rising insurance premiums.
"The Federal Government still hasn't spent a cent from the $4 billion Emergency Response Fund Scott Morrison announced nearly two years ago."
Mrs GIlbert's concerns have been supported by the Mackay based Liberal/National Federal Member for Dawson, George Christensen, who highlighted North Queenslanders home insurance crisis in a speech to Federal Parliament last week.
Home-owners have also question why Mackay residents' home insurance premiums have jumped by 72 to 92 percent in 2021, when there have not been widespread insurance claims since Cyclone Debbie in 2017.
Apartment or strata owners have also faced impossible increases, which have increased 20-fold from $1000 per one million dollars in unit value, to $20,0000 for every one million dollars in apartment valuation.
Mrs Gilbert said that federal election may be held this year and "so I will speak to federal Labor Candidates to ensure that North QUeensland home insurance is put on the political agenda.
"Locals and business owners affected by exorbitant insurance costs must not be burdened with these unsustainable costs in the future."
Mrs Giblert said "this issue has been a problem for a long time and yet the Liberal National Parties have continued to allow big insurance companies to get away with ripping us all off.
"The ongoing risk of floods and cyclones means affordable insurance is absolutely essential to people in Mackay and in the North, but Scott Mirrison has done nothing to help."
A reply to these comments is being sought from the Prime Minister's Department.
