Labor announces coal mine worker as Labor candidate for Dawson

MACKAY local and coal mine worker Shane Hamilton has been announced as Labor’s candidate for Dawson to contest the next federal election.

Speaking in Mackay to announce Mr Hamilton at the Resources Centre of Excellence, Leader of the Australian Labor Party Anthony Albanese said Mr Hamilton would be an “outstanding” candidate who would “give the people of Dawson the voice they deserve.”

As a third generation local who is raising his three children with wife Anita in Mackay, Mr Hamilton is passionate about North Queensland, its future, and the people who live here.

“For a decade, the Liberals have neglected North Queensland - with George Christensen focusing too much on his own personal political agenda rather than listening and delivering for Dawson.

“It’s time for a fresh start, with someone who has new ideas, the drive, and someone who will stand up for our local community.

Mr Hamilton said creating secure, long-term jobs in both the resources industry and in regional manufacturing would be a key priority for Labor.

“As a party, Labor will invest heavily in regional manufacturing to create secure long-term jobs for our region. We need to be a country that makes things again and right here in Dawson we have the knowledge, skills and the industry to lead that charge.

“As a worker in the coal mining industry, I know how important our resources industry is for local jobs and for our entire economy which is why Labor backs our mining industry and the workers in it.”

Mr Hamilton said Labor would end the casualisation rort in the mining industry and other industries which sees workers miss out on paid holiday leave and other entitlements.

“Under the Liberals, casualisation in our mining industry has exploded. It’s time we had a federal government that’s on the side of workers.”

Mr Hamilton said he was excited to contest the next federal election, vowing to be on the side of workers, families, and the elderly.

“Under Labor, families will have access to cheaper childcare, and we’ll ensure dignity for our elderly through top-notch aged care.

“People in Dawson deserve a representative who is on their side, and will fight to put Dawson first, which is what I intend to do every step of the way.”

As a key priority, Mr Hamilton said he would be getting out and meeting voters across the electorate to hear firsthand about the issues that mattered to them.
