Five new First Year Constables (FYC) have recently completed their training at the North Queensland Police Academy and are within days (for some, only hours) of starting their very first operational shift!

One of our FYCs grew up in Mackay, while the remaining have come to us from varied locations – Wollongong, Noosa, Ipswich, and also Taree.

The backgrounds, skills and experiences which they bring to our district are also very diverse with prior careers in probation and parole, immigration, child care, bartending and oyster farming!

I was fortunate to be allowed to speak with one of our new police officers yesterday as they took part in the local FYC orientation day.

Meet Constable Rachel King

What did you do before coming to the North Queensland Police Academy?

For the last 10 years or so, I have lived in Brisbane working as a parole officer with Queensland Corrective Services. I was a senior case manager there for a number of years and wanted to transition over to the other side of things.

When did you finish up at the Academy?

I finished up last Thursday.

When did you start your intense training there?

I started in January, so six months of training.

What area of study did you enjoy the most?

I really enjoyed the physical elements – its something different to what I’m used to doing. I also enjoyed the criminal investigation side of things – I found that quite interesting.

It was your orientation day yesterday, when is your first operational shift?

Next Monday at Mackay City Police Station.

Have you ever been to Mackay before?

Yes, I used to live here.

All of our new FYCs are clearly very excited and keen to begin their policing careers.

Two officers will do so in Proserpine while the remaining three officers will begin work at the Mackay City Police Station.

To all five of our new FYCs, congratulations on successfully completing your academy training! We welcome you to the Mackay Police District and wish you luck with your new careers.
