Driver critically injured in horror highway smash

RACQ CQ Rescue has flown a critically injured driver to Townsville hospital in a marathon mission after a serious smash on the Bruce Highway early Sunday morning.

A Toyota Landcruiser travelling south on the Bruce Highway about 2am missed a bend near McDermott’s Road at Calen and was ejected from the vehicle, suffering multiple and life- threatening injuries.

RACQ CQ Rescue, with a doctor and Critical Care Paramedic on board, was tasked by Queensland Health about 3am and arrived on scene at 3.30am.

The female driver, the sole occupant of the vehicle, was loaded into the helicopter and flown to Townsville Hospital about 4.30am in a critical condition.

RACQ CQ Rescue flew more than 666km to transfer the patient from the accident scene on the highway at Calen to Townsville Hospital before returning to base in Mackay later that day.
