A LOCAL fishing expert reckons the best bait to catch bream in Mackay with is either beach worms or prawns. Tackle World Mackay salesman Nathan Edwards loves to fish and said the sport is very popular with many families. He said not everyone knows what fish are available or the best bait to catch them with.

“(Around) this time of year (the fish) that are easy to catch for the family, that are also common, are the whiting, bream and flathead,” Mr Edwards said. When it comes to the best time of day to fish, he said it is better on an incoming tide.

“Normally, it’s better for most people to fish better on an incoming tide with the tide rising at coastal spots and beaches, it’s covering new ground,” Mr Edwards said. Mr Edwards said the best bait to catch fish with at this time of year is either beach worms or prawns.

“The very popular other bait are the yabbies, which you have to obtain using a yabbie pump, where you’re sucking the yabbies out of the sand,” he said. “Chicken’s not a bad bait, especially for the bream. Not so much for the flathead and whiting.

When it comes to the best type of fishing gear to use, he said it did not have to be anything flash. “You don’t need anything flash to get a few of those fish. “You can use either hand lines or just a spinning reel,” he said. “There’s been plenty around the creeks and places like the Pioneer River, which has been fishing well. “Up towards Seaforth as well, that’s been fishing well.
