Pop-up cinemas to come to Airlie Beach
ENTHUSIASTIC movie buffs and young families will soon be able to enjoy the cinemas at the Airlie Beach Foreshore.
Airlie Beach Residents were recently asked for their feedback on the installation of a semi-permanent 5.5m x 3m LED screen, which will be placed next to a sound stage.
A local artist will paint a mural on the shipping container that will store the LED screen, “to ensure the structure is visually appealing”.
The Whitsunday Regional Council said they received 159 submissions, where 60 percent of participants supported the proposal.
“The consultation was open online for a period of three weeks on Your Say Whitsunday, between Monday, March 15 and Monday, April 5, 2021,” the report said.
“A public display was held on Saturday, March 27, between 8am to 12pm, at the Airlie Beach Markets.”
Construction is currently underway and is expected to be finished by the end of September, 2021.
“The screen offers a wide range of opportunities for community events and activities on the Foreshore, such as regular free family movie nights in the park,” the report said.
“There are also opportunities for community organisations to make use of the screen, if the event is free and the content abides by Whitsunday Regional Council’s strict guidelines of G rated entertainment only, in public spaces.”
When not in use, the screen will retracts into a container and can be moved by crane and truck to another location.
“There is also the option for WRC to play other regular free entertainment on the screen, such as sport or children's programs,” the report said.
