Local authors win praise, medals
LOCALS authors Dion Mayne and Paul Richardson have written an historical novel called Boomerang Gold.
The book has already garnered interest around the traps and last month was was awarded a Silver Medal for the Best Regional eBook in the 25th Annual IPPY Awards. (Independent Publishers Book Awards) This International Award recognizes Excellence in Independent Publishing and was hosted in New York. Dion works at the Sugar Australia Refinery at Racecourse and Paul was a School Principal throughout Qld, England and PNG. He is now retired and spends time with his family and writing books.
Although the authors were excited to have won this prestigious gong, they were unable to attend the awards ceremony. “Because of COVID we weren’t able to fly there to accept our Silver Medal, instead had to ‘Zoom’ the Ceremony from our lounge rooms.,” Dion said.
The two authors met at school, though not, as you might expect, as schoolmates. “Paul was my Principal when I attended Eungella State Primary school and always encouraged his students to enjoy their imaginations and embrace what they love,” Dion said. “Paul has published several books of his own before I reached out to him with my own manuscript and asked if he’d like to co-author it with me and bring it to life as a novel.”
The book took the pair three years to complete and, along with the silver medal, have also received a Gold B.R.A.G. Medallion. This is for a highly recommended head for book lovers of historical fiction. They also received the recent Silver IPPY Award.
“The awards come at an opportune time with the publication of our prequel, Masquerade Gold which focuses on the espionage between Europe’s World Powers in the 16th Century,” Dion said. “We are hoping for the same international success with Masquerade Gold and really enjoy the support from our readers that are here in Australia and overseas.”
The novels are available in print and eBook, and available at all major online stores. A book launch and signing for Masquerade Gold will be held at Wests Leagues Club on Friday and at ‘The Avenue’ (North Mackay) 10am Sunday.
