Dressing up, playing in style

PLAY: A dress rehearsal for a play about the same dress

LUANA Royle first discovered Five Women Wearing the Same Dress back in the 2000s and dreamed she would direct the play one day.

Fast forward a few years and she has her wish – directing the Kucom Theatre production of the play.

She said the play made her laugh and think. She said she wants it to have that same impact upon others under her directorship.

The play is a dark comedy written by American playwright Alan Ball about five bridesmaids – Meredith, Frances, Mindy, Georgeanne and Trisha, who don’t like the bride, Tracey.

Mrs Royle said what stood out to her about the dark comedy, was it focused mainly on women, allowing the opportunity to showcase where it showcased the talent of regional women.

“It had five, completely different characters going through so many different facets of their past,” Mrs Royle said. “I heard about it quite a few years ago and I thought ‘I would really like to direct it (one day)’.

“I started Googling to find it and I found it, got the play, approached Kucom with it and they said ‘yeah’.

“It was just interesting, as it was a real true comedy.

“So yeah, it just came about, being able to direct this play.”

She explained the play was originally scheduled to come out last year, but was given “a second lease on life”.

“Originally, it was going to come out in the year COVID hit.

The production will be staged at Kucom Theatre, 1 Snow Wright Court, Andergrove, with its season opening on July 15.
