Botanic Gardens puts flora and fauna in the spotlight

MAKE friends with native wildlife, learn how to transform your household recycling into beautiful works of art for your garden and pick up some helpful tips that will make your gardens flourish.

Mackay Regional Botanic Gardens will host its fifth annual open day this Saturday (June 5) from 9am to 1pm on the Tropical Sun Garden Lawn.

This year’s theme is “flora for fauna”, which explores the close relationship of host plants and the creatures that call them home.

Mayor Greg Williamson said the event catered to all ages, young and old.

“Whether you’re interested in gardening, bird watching, conservation, or just finding something to entertain the family, this event has it all. There will be free kids’ activities including a butterfly trail and story time session with the libraries team, as well as a workshop where you can learn how to build a hotel for the insects in your garden," he said.

“We will have local plant experts giving gardening talks, art enthusiasts sharing their passion for botanical art through demonstrations and displays, and a native bee display.

“The kids will especially love meeting the native wildlife that is being taken care of by the Australian Wildlife Rescue Service and there will be plenty of bargains for green thumbs at the plant stalls.”

“Best of all, this event is free to attend and will be a fun, educational day for the whole family!”

The Botanic Gardens Café will be open from 8am to 4pm, serving drinks and food.
