Tribute to beloved Mackay father
Vale, Kenneth Richard Hargreaves 1925-2021. It is with the heaviest heart that I must announce the passing of Kenneth (Ken) Hargreaves on Wednesday, March 24.
Dad was the eldest son to Richard and Edith Hargreaves (Dec) Step son to Reina (Dec) and brother to sisters Joan (Dec), Enid (Dec) Dorothy and Rita, brother to Graham (Dec) and brother in law to Betsy.
Dad was born in Yeppoon in 1925 and moved to Mackay with the family shortly after the Great Depression.
As a young man Dad apprenticed at Racecourse Mill to become a fitter and turner.
At the outset of WW II, Dad was declared in a reserved occupation and he spent the war years at Walkers foundry preparing munitions and equipment for Australia’s fighting forces.
Dad would have preferred to join the merchant navy but understood the high demand of his skills to support the war effort.
During the closing years of the War, Dad met a beautiful young seamstress from Rockhampton.
He used ride his old Indian motorcycle down to Rocky at every chance to visit our mum to be Lorna (Doon) Hargreaves (Dec) nee Cowdaroy.
Together they raised five sons, Norman, Kenneth (Snow), John, Mark and Luke all who survived to celebrate Kens life.
Father to five sons, Grandfather to 13 and Great Grandfather to 12, who are all proud to be his decedents.
Ken and Doon established the High Trees poultry farm at Andergrove and later they relocated the farm to Habana where they operated the business until retiring to Eimeo in the late nineties.
Dad spent many years serving the Mackay community in the Mackay City Band, in Rotary and with other community actions.
We invite all to share the fondest memories and to celebrate his life at St Ambrose Church, North Mackay at 10:30 am on Wednesday April 7.
While the family is saddened by his passing we celebrate his life as being proudly and successfully lived.
