Ten ways to simple zero-waste action

THE second of our top 10 ways to reduce our impact is remembering to bring Reusable Bags whenever shopping. By Lucy Smith and Karen Jacobson from Zero Waste Whitsundays

Put them in your car or your hand bag or your pocket. Take them to the supermarket and eliminate the need to buy and continue to use single use plastic bags.

For a long time we had a great selection of reus- able bags but it was a challenge to remember them.

They would invariably be at home when we unexpectedly shopped. Now, we leave our reusable bags near the front door after we have unpacked the groceries.

We then take them to the car the next time we are heading out.

The car is their permanent home so we always have them handy.

The other way to remember reusable bags is having a fold up bag or two in your handbag.

They are super light and take up very little room so you will almost always be prepared.

Are you a business owner looking for a zero waste friendly merchandise or promotional item?

Reusable bags are a brilliant option.

Your business or product will be promoted, and you will be help- ing to minimise the role of single use plastics in our communities.

If you forget your reusable bags and end up at the checkout with more items than you can carry, take heart in our Zero Waste Whitsundays motto.

This quote by Anne Bonneau: “We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly. We need mil- lions of people doing it imperfectly.”

You could also place groceries back into the trolley, wheel to the car and transfer into your bags you have left in the boot. Our children are watching all of our actions, and including them in our Zero Waste journey is import-ant.

Ask everyone in the family to help remember the reusable bags.

The aim is to raise awareness of the amount of plastic in our lives and to make choices to reduce our con- sumption.

There are many tips and tools online, and you can join the Plastic Free July challenge.

Please let us know if you will be joining.
