Local Farmers Markets celebrates five years
THE WHITSUNDAY Farmers Markets has proved to be a hit with Mackay locals, as it celebrated its fifth anniversary today.
Manager Gillian Malloy was proud of how far the markets have come and the fresh produce they help sell every week.
“We’d never have been here without the support of our community. A lot of our community are friends that come every single week,” Mrs Malloy said.
“We’re celebrating Greater Whitsundays Farmers Markets, we’ve been here five years.
“A lot of our stallholders have been here since our inception, it’s quite an exciting time.”
Mrs Malloy said part of their success was the continued support by the community, their sponsors, Mackay Regional Council and Grant Broadcasters, along with their loyal members and stallholders.
She was honoured by the community’s attendance and said the markets are now going through a new stage of growth.
What she loved about the markets was the seasonal fresh produce they offer every week.
“If you look around you can see that we got strawberries, we got mushrooms and everything is grown around the region,” she said.
“It’s not as if we got stuff coming in from Brisbane, from the markets there. Everything is seasonal.”
Mrs Malloy said the Greater Whitsundays Farmers Market applied for funding, which would allow them to expand and make a food hub.
“Applied for funding at the moment to expand what we got here...by opening up a food hub. People would be able to come and shop out of market times,” she said.
“(We have) a lot of bigger events coming around for the network.”
