Mackay’s most experienced and helpful shopkeepers will meet again at the former Lamberts department store reunion on August 28.

Three generations of staff provided friendly and thoughtful service for 118-years at Mackay’s department store which sold everything and began trading in 1887.

Customer service was everything, which even began with a door greeter in the 1970s, plus Lamberts was also the first shop in Mackay to have an elevator.

Lamberts sold produce to groceries, bedding, sewing machines, apparel, giftware, costume jewelry, music, Manchester, haberdashery and millinery.

Lamberts was located at Centrepoint and Lambert’s popular attractions included public fashion parades in the Centrepoint Mall, which at the time linked Victoria and Wood Streets

Customers were offered credit, layby, and cash sales before credit cards existed.

The bond and team effort amongst the staff was special and reunion organiser, Garry Edwards, who worked for Lamberts for 30-years, said he knew of 11 marriages between staff over the years.

Lamberts Pty Ltd organised numerous staff events including car rallies, weddings, anniversaries, engagements, Christmas, Black Friday and just for fun parties.

The grandest party of them all was the week-long 100-year celebration, with a big to-do in a grand-marque at Lamberts Beach with everyone dressed in period costume as they arrived in vintage cars.

Staff uniforms changed over the years from black and white to a mustard dress and tropical Friday shirts, plus there were themed dress-up days.

Lamberts was the last of the local owned and operated family department stores in Mackay, which closed in 2001.

The other stores were Bernies, Marsh, Webster, Michelmores and Fields. Waltons took over from Bernies and David Jones took over Marsh and Webster, but sadly all have gone and are in the past.

Reunion organiser, Garry Edwards said past staff members are very welcome to attend the reunion at Souths Suburban Bowls Club on Saturday, August 29. Garry can be contacted on Tel: 0400 242 779, or by email at garry_edwards53@hotmail.com.
