Fear is not the key

IT IS not unexpected that our community is wondering what is going on with the rate of crime – and serious crime, at that – being reported throughout the region at the moment.

By Meredith Papas

Like anything, we could turn a blind eye and pretend it isn’t an issue. But that would do no one any good.

During the next few weeks, Mackay Local News will be shining a spotlight not only on the crime in Mackay region but on what is driving it and the underlying influences.

We are also joining the call by Mackay Police for residents of the Mackay Police District – which spans an area right across our readership of Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions – to have their say on what their areas of concern are in the region.

Attached to this editorial there is a QR Code which will take you to a link for the Mackay Crime Prevention Unit’s anonymous survey.

Please take the time to scan this QR Code with your Smart Phone and complete the survey. It’s an investment of only two to three minutes of your time and it is mostly a box-ticking exercise.

However, there is a chance for you to lend your own personal thoughts, in a special free text section, The survey enables you – our readers – to express your own personal concerns. Mackay Police – and all of our emergency services and first responders – are to be commended for the incredible work they do to keep us safe.

They have to face scenes and deal with situations many of us cannot even begin to imagine. But it is happening right here in our community. Please don’t think that our coverage of this issue is about fear mongering or sensationalism.

That is not our ethos as a publication.

Instead, this is about empowering you as members of our community; about lending whatever assistance we can to our Police and law enforcement; and supporting those in the community who are working so hard to keep everyone safe.

As we make our way through the issues affecting our community, we would love to hear from you.

After all, that is what we are here for – and it is your input which will ensure we are meeting the needs of our community.

So, feel free to reach out. You can connect with me directly at meredith@mackaylocalnews.com.au – I would love to hear from you.
