Coconut trees go in foreshore clean-up
Contractors for the Mackay Regional Council have removed up to 10 coconut trees from the Esplanade Reserve at Seaforth.
The works took place in mid-January although no-one in the local community was aware the trees were being removed or why.
The Mackay Regional Council has confirmed up to 10 trees were removed by contractors after being “identified as being structurally unsound by council’s coconut de-nutting contractor”.
The stumps of the trees have been ground down and will soon be covered by grass while the integrity of the coconut tree plantation along the foreshore reserve remains largely intact.
The town’s precious mango trees have not been affected and will continue to provide shade for Sunday markets and visitors.
